RIP to a Legend of the Game & An Inspiration to Eastside

RIP to a Legend of the Game & An Inspiration to Eastside

Dear Eastside Golf Community,

When we reflect on the legends who have paved the way in the world of golf, few names shine brighter than Chi Chi Rodriguez. His legacy is not just about his incredible skill and charisma on the course, but also about the trail he blazed for so many who came after him. Meeting Chi Chi in January 2020 at the PGA Show was an unforgettable experience, one that left a profound impact on both of us and on the journey of Eastside Golf.

During our conversation, Chi Chi took a moment to admire the Eastside Golf logo, a symbol that represents authenticity, culture and the breaking of barriers. Hearing him speak about the logo with such enthusiasm was a validation of our mission and the work we are doing to make golf more inclusive and accessible.

But the conversation didn’t stop there. We asked Chi Chi a question that has weighed heavily on our hearts and minds: why is there such low representation of minorities in golf? His answer was rooted in history, in the changing dynamics of the sport as it grew more lucrative.

Chi Chi spoke about how, as the purse value in golf increased, the presence of minority caddies – who had long been a vital part of the sport – began to decline. It was a poignant reminder that the evolution of the game has not always been inclusive and that there is still much work to be done to ensure that everyone has a place in golf, regardless of their background.

Chi Chi's insight serves as both a challenge and an inspiration to us at Eastside Golf. It reminds us why we do what we do. We stand on the shoulders of giants like Chi Chi Rodriguez, who broke down barriers and opened doors for future generations.

With Chi Chi’s recent passing at the age of 88, we are deeply saddened by the loss of a true legend. His legacy will forever be a guiding light in the world of golf and beyond. As we continue to build and expand Eastside Golf, we carry Chi Chi’s spirit with us, committed to making the sport more welcoming and accessible to all.

Rest in peace, Chi Chi. Thank you for your wisdom, your legacy and your unwavering commitment to the game. We are honored to walk in your footsteps and to continue the work of making golf a sport that truly belongs to everyone.

With deep respect and gratitude,

Olajuwon Ajanaku & Earl Cooper
